About Us

Bunter Spring Winery is a family “garage” winery, located in the Napa Valley, that produces small-lot wines for a select list of restaurants, wine shops, and for friends and family. Having helped make wine for others, like August, then Sam, then Don Sebastiani, Robert and then Peter Mondavi, assorted rich folk, and the odd Frenchman or two, we realized there was only one sure way to call your own shots:  get your own winery.  So the “garage” is getting licensed.  Why bother?   We have two winemaking purposes for starting our small winery.

First, under our “Bunter label,”  our goal is to create simply made, but complex, wines of great quality and unique character, using as little technology and as few additives as possible. Farming thoughtfully, picking the grapes at balanced ripeness, adding as little as possible (nothing, ideally), doing all that is necessary, and no more…that’s our thinking on winemaking.   We want these wines to be extraordinary, with an emphasis on individuality and expression of place. We choose varieties, appellations, and vineyards that create wines capable of commanding your attention and engaging your intellect as well as your senses. We make --at the very most-- a few barrels of each of our wines. Our Bunter Syrah is generally only ninety to one hundred gallons each vintage.

Our second aim is to draw on our relationships with growers and winemaker friends to source, blend, and bottle wines that we ourselves want to drink, and offer them to our mailing list friends for below-market prices.  These wines will be offered under our “Spring label.”   These will be great wines from quality vineyards in famed growing areas, not the hot-country bulk wines one finds in the supermarket. The wines will be honestly made, in real barrels, no oak chips or grape concentrate. The production of these wines is very small and distribution is limited.
